Creating jobs: Helping to build the Shell Cove Marina
Shellharbour needs to move away from the commonly held perception that we are just another suburb of Wollongong but rather become known as "Shellharbour the Gateway to the South Coast”. I believe the construction of the Marina would put us on the map literally and open up some fantastic opportunities for our local people in the area of tourism related jobs. The marina would provide in excess of 2400 jobs and many business opportunities. If elected to council I would be committed to working on the platform already established to seek Federal and State funding to see this long held dream come to fruition.
Improved health services for families
I believe that we need to be committed to seeing our health services reflect the growth that our region is experiencing. I recently heard a story of a retired man who has been suffering from cancer for a number of years and had to sit in a waiting room for 22 hours until a bed became available. If elected I would commit to working with other community leaders and seek for an expansion of our Shellharbour hospital.
Protecting our environment.
We are the second fastest growing regional area in Australia, while the growth presents many positive opportunities for our future I believe that we should ensure that sustainability is at the forefront of our thinking and planning. As a result of this I believe there should be limited development of Killalea and some of our other nature zones. Regarding the park entrance fee I believe an annual fee would be appropriate as long as the fees were used to maintain the park.
Helping to create better access to services.
While enjoying the growth and expansion we are experiencing we must never lose sight as a community that there are people within our community that are doing it tough. Shellharbour has some wonderful agencies currently operating but I believe we need to develop more assistance for families and individuals in need. One of the great concerns is the increase of homelessness and what is quite alarming is the amount of families facing a homeless future. If elected to council I would continue to work with other agencies and work towards developing solutions for the people in our City that are in need. It just doesn't seem right that people have to travel to Wollongong to access showers and other vital services. As a city we must remain committed to taking care of our own. If elected I would also propose a review of the increased costs for use of Council fields, and facilities and seek a thorough justification for such increases.
Working towards a safer community.
Shellharbour has one of the busiest Police Stations in NSW and our Police are regularly faced with many challenging situation. If elected to council I would like to form a working group and look across the Nation to other regions and review the strategies and programmes that other communities are implementing in assisting to make their community a safer place. As a community we must all be committed to working towards a safer City for all.
Sustainable infrastructure and development.
We have all heard of and even possibly experienced the difficulties and frustrations that come from over development at the cost of maintaining existing infrastructure. If elected to council I would like to help in working towards ensuring that future development is given adequate consideration and planning, not limiting our ability as a City to maintain our beautiful parks and roads. With this in mind I would commit to reviewing how the proposed Calderwood development would impact existing infrastructure. Council also recently released a draft policy of proposed heritage listing of over 200 homes in the Shellharbour area. If elected to council I would like to propose a complete review of this draft policy. I would also propose a review for what needs to be done to fix Tickner corner in Albion Park and the lack of available parking at our hospital.
Working towards improved commuter services
As our City continues to grow so should our access to commuter services. That’s why I believe we need to work towards the development of a regional airport that will not only service our district but many of the residents who live on the South Coast. If elected I would work towards the development of a regional airport and also work towards the improvement of our existing commuter services.
